A high-level government delegation led by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohamed-Mubarak, has arrived in Damongo to engage the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, in efforts to restore calm in the Savannah Region.
The meeting, taking place at the Jakpa Palace, brings together traditional authorities, community leaders, and security chiefs to discuss ways of de-escalating tensions and finding a peaceful resolution to the recent conflict in the Sawla-Bole area.
Members of the government delegation include the Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. William Agyapong; Inspector-General of Police, Patrick Tetteh Yohunu; Director-General of Prisons, Patience Baffoe Bonnie; Comptroller-General of Immigration, Samuel Amandu Bansintale; and Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Lawrence Gbetamu Nana Adu-Gyamfi.
The intervention follows renewed clashes in Sawla-Bole which prompted President John Mahama, during a state visit to Singapore, to hold a telephone discussion with the Yagbonwura on strategies to safeguard peace.
As a result, the Interior Minister was dispatched to lead the delegation in working with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), traditional rulers, and community stakeholders to reinforce dialogue, restore law and order, and promote lasting stability in the area.
